READING Sites
Tips
for Parents, Helping Children Read, and Summer Reading are some of the
topics found on CDLI's Elementary Themes page. This site is an
excellent resource for parents to use throughout the year. It was
developed by Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education to provide
educational opportunities for both remote and urban communities.
RIF Reading Planet is
the site from the Reading Is Fundamental organization. There are four
areas: Game
Station, Express Yourself, Activity Lab and Book Zone. Game Station, of
course, has a lot of games in it. It also has a personality quiz to help
users locate the genre they would like to read
and a writing section where users can add to a story. Activity Lab has
fun things to do at home or while traveling. Express Yourself has postcards
to send electronically plus interviews with celebrities on reading. Book
Zone
has
a search tool
to find books. Overall, it's a cool site for hot times.
For Beginning Readers: Reading Games for
the emerging reader. The focus is on phonics and sight words. A
good resource for your home reading program!
Reading Rainbow
has a variety of games and activities as well as book lists. Read a
book and submit you own review.
Summer Reading list from
Education World and
Barnes and Noble. This site has suggested reading lists by grade.
Book Adventure
is a FREE reading motivation program for children in grades K-8. Children
create their own book lists from over 7,000 recommended titles, take
multiple choice quizzes on the books they've read, and earn points and
prizes for their literary successes. Similar to Accelerated Reader.
Scholastic's
Summer Reading site is for both parents and students. It contains
book recommendations, activities, tips, and resources to help motivate all
your young readers.
MATH
and SCIENCE Sites
DoDEA's website provides links to sites that feature lessons,
activities, games, puzzles, and research resources for students of all
ages. It's a great site for parents and students to find ideas for summer

Paper Plate
Education website, created by Chuck Bueter at DePaul University, offers
numerous hands-on activities covering a range of science and math topics
and education levels.
With an abundance of paper plates and a few other common items, students
can learn about the seasonal changes of the sun, the phases
of the moon, the interior
of planets, rainbows, sundials, and much more. Visitors can view
images of some completed paper plate projects.
Planet ARKive is
an interactive site for children aged 7-11 that lets children
explore animal life. It is a digital library containing films, photographs
and audio recordings of
many of the world’s
animal species. There are also fun games, quizzes, and activities for the
budding biologists in your family.
National
Geographic Explorer is for grades
two through six. Students are invited to explore the world and all that is
in it.
BrainPOP
Jr. provides educational movies and homework help for K-3
students. Each animated movie has quizzes, games, vocabulary, and activities
for kids. Brain POP
and BrainPOP
en Espaņol can be enjoyed by all grade levels.
Little
Shop of Physics is Colorado State University's hands-on science
outreach program. The site contains over 200 experiments for students
of all ages.
Web
Rangers is the National Park Service's site for kids of all
ages. Explore National Parks, Monuments and Historic Sites.
MUSIC Sites
Dallas
Symphony Orchestra's Music Room and San
Francisco Symphony have fun music games and learning activities.
Explore instruments and learn about people who make the music.
